desires of the three conditioned realms, and attained the three knowledges.

People of the time heard of this, and praised him as the Rib Saint.
So the Rib Saint was born after being in the womb for sixty years.
Perhaps he even practiced intensively while still in the womb. After he was
born, when he reached eighty, he aroused the mind that seeks the Way and
left the life of family. It was 140 years from the time of his conception. He
was a rare and outstanding man although he was older than any of his
Dharma contemporaries. He had grown old in the womb, and he grew old
after he was born. However, he took people’s criticism to heart and
unrelentingly endeavoured in the Way and so after only three years realized
the Way.
From Mahakasyapa daiosho, the Transmission passed through
Ananda daiosho to
Shanavasa daiosho to
Upagupta daiosho to
Dhritaka daiosho to
Miccaka daiosho to
Vasumitra daiosho to
Buddhanandi daiosho to
Buddhamitra daiosho to
Parshva daiosho.
We don’t know anything really about Parshva, including whether he really
lived or not. The Jingde Chuandenglu records the Transmission in India passing
directly from Teacher to student, just as it had in Tang and Song China since the
time of Hongren and Huineng. Just as we can know little historically about Huike and
Bodhidharma, the historicity of the Indian Ancestral Transmission is really a thread
of legends.
Parshva is the Tenth Awakened Ancestor counting from Mahakasyapa. Keizan
zenji’s Denkoroku states that after three years of continuous practice, Parshva hears
a passage from a sutra on the Unborn nature of all things being chanted and is
Awakened. The Chuandenglu simply says that
He did continuous practice. Later, the Master said to him, “The Great Eye of
Dharma Wisdom from the Thus Come One is now being given to you. You
must maintain it well. Listen:
The primordial truth is nameless
but with names the truth is made manifest.
When the true Dharma is received
there is neither truth nor falsehood.
After which, his Teacher Buddhamitra entered a harmonization, died, and was
cremated. The Chuandenglu places this as being in the 35th year of the Jing era of
the Zhou dynasty which would be around 505 B.C.E.
The Chuandenglu and Keizan Jokin zenji’s Denkoroku both provide more or
less the same information about Parshva’s Transmission to Punyashas, so I will read
from the Denkoroku:
When the Venerable Parshva came to Kasi he sat down to rest beneath
a tree. Pointing to the ground, he said to his followers, “If this ground
becomes a golden hue, there is a sage who will enter into my community.” As
he said this, the ground became a golden hue. Then a son of a wealthy family
named Punyashas appeared and stood with folded hands before Parshva as
