On Dietary Doctrines
Zen Master Anzan Hoshin, the Practice Council, and White Wind Zen Community do not advocate any particular dietary or nutritional philosophy. The dishes served at formal meals and oryoki for residents, retreatants, and during sesshin and Dharma Assemblies are lacto-ovo vegetarian simply because the majority of people can all eat these things. There are however too many brands and factions of vegetarianism/veganism/macrobiotics for their various concerns to be considered. Where possible, allergies are taken into account but some people might need to bring their own already prepared meals. If you are scheduling a retreat or a Dharma Assembly and have special needs, you must contact the Office of the Tenzo about this each time, well in advance, so that whatever arrangements are necessary can be made. In general, our approach to cuisine is to express harmony and vividness, a broad palette of flavours and ingredients, and a balance of proteins and carbohydrates.
